Regions - Kootenays - Bugaboo Provincial Park

The spires of the Bugaboos are a world-class Alpine climbing destination. Splittler Alpine granite faces 100m to over 1000m in height present a variety of objectives. High season is July--September. Two of the many famous routes in the Bugaboos are in Roper and Steck's "Fifty Classic Climbs of North America": The Northeast Ridge of Bugaboo and The Beckey-Chouinard on South Howser. The BC Parks Website is http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/bugaboo/

Mechanized (power) drilling is prohibited within this park. All peaks and routes normally climbed from the Conrad Kain Hut are within the park, including the west side of the Howser Spires. Reservations for the hut are handled through the Alpine Club of Canada at (403) 678-3200, or www.alpineclubofcanada.ca. Camping, either in the designated locations near the hut, or at Applebee Dome, is $5/night. Hut fees are $20/night. Bivouacking and camping at the Bugaboo-Snowpatch col, the Howser-Pigeon col and its immediate vicinity, and on the west ridge of Pigeon Spire, is not permitted.
The local climbing organization is Friends of Bugaboo Park http://www.friendsofbugaboopark.com/

Applebee clear

for Bugaboo Provincial Park

written by Peter Winter

Latest reports are that Applebee is clear of snow and the spires are in good condition. Parties have been up the Beckey-Chouinard, however the Howsers are still looking a bit "snowy".

Bugaboos Update

for Bugaboo Provincial Park

written by Peter Winter

Forwarded from Tay Hanson: You can now get past the avalanche debris to the parking lot (thanks to industrious shovellers). You do encounter snow around the 2000m mark (below the hut), but travel on the glaciers is easy and a lot of objectives are in. Anything steep or south facing is mostly dry (with snow on ledges), Kain and Pigeon are snowy but Kain has been done.Howsers are still pretty wintery but other than that you can climb more routes than not, and probably just encounter snow on the summits. In summary, its goldanged beautiful up there with hardly anyone around!Let it begin. CASBC Bugaboo Report

for Bugaboo Provincial Park

written by Jeremy Frimer

Several months ago, CASBC asked members to complete 6 open-ended questions about the future of the Bugaboos, focused on the issues of a user cap and a via ferrata. Forty-five members responded; The results have now been compiled into an 11 page report. In short, CASBC members were generally against both a user cap and a via ferrata, offering alternatives such as education/informational campaigns and increasing camping capacity in the Park. download the CASBC Bugaboo Survey.

The Report has been submitted to the staff of Bugaboo Provincial Park. We will keep members informed of any decisions, as they become publicly known.

2009 CASBC Bugaboo Provincial Park Survey

for Bugaboo Provincial Park

written by Eric Goodwin

In 2008, B.C. Parks distributed a survey (“The BC Parks Survey”) asking park
users and interested parties for their opinions on various issues regarding
Bugaboo Provincial Park. (The survey can be downloaded here)

Several months ago we encouraged our members to fill out the survey and
provide their comments to B.C. Parks. However, we are not aware of how many
of our members completed the survey and what the general consensus is
regarding the Bugaboos.

Therefore, we have developed our own survey in a more open-ended format and wish to incorporate the responses into a coherent investigation of the
issues. In the coming weeks we will provide BC Parks with a report on the
issues from our perspective, including possible solutions.

If you have some time, please complete the survey here.

Survey: Restricted Access and Via Ferrata

for Bugaboo Provincial Park

written by Jeremy Frimer

Bugaboo Provincial Park is currently conducting a survey that asks users and those with vested interest in the Park questions about usage. The Survey also elicits opinions about two controversial proposals for the park.

1. A Via Ferrata. To avoid having climbers ascend and descend the snow/ice slope leading to the Bugaboo-Snowpatch Col, the Park has proposed a Via Ferrata, which would ascend to the left of the col along the base of Tom Egan Memorial Wall on Snowpatch Spire.

2. Access Restriction. Concerned with overcrowding, the Park is considering capping the user rates.

Those interested in the proposals and willing to provide feedback to the Park, please download the survey by copying and pasting the following link into your browser:

Fill it out and send it to the address found on the first page of the survey
