Lantzville Foothills Trails

for The Steppes

written by Eric Goodwin

It seems that the Lantzville foothill trails are opening back up to the public after the new landowner closed them last year. If we get any more concrete news we'll let you know.

"The fence and gate at the Harwood entrance were removed. Presumably if the new owners wanted to continue to keep people out they wouldn't have removed the barriers and signs. Also the Vipond access gate has a sign stating hiking and biking are allowed." via. ryanguy on islandclimbing.com

Greg Sorensen Resignation

for Vancouver Island - North

written by Peter Winter

Sadly, Greg Sorensen has stepped down from CASBC. Greg has been our longest serving Director (for well over 10 years), but as it goes with volunteering there comes a time when one has to move on. The Board thanks Greg for his dedicated work over the years and wish him luck in his new free time! He will continue to be an Area Rep for us so all is not lost. Thanks Greg!

The Steppes

for The Steppes

written by Greg Sorensen

The "Steppes" is located in the Lantzville foothills in the North end of Nanaimo. It is one of the more frequented climbing crags in Nanaimo with 52 lines to choose from ranging from 5.6 to 5.12b. The rock is sharp Basalt, and so it still has some loose rock, helmets are reccomended. Most of the routes finish at a Fixe belay rings on the face with the occasional back up set back from the cliff.
Gear: There are sport, mixed and a few trad routes to satisfy every type of climber. The routes vary in length from 7 to 21 meters.

Lantzville Foothills: The Steppes, Mt Copley and area.

for Vancouver Island - North

written by Greg Sorensen

There is some concern at present that access to these areas will become a concern in the very near future. There has been one report of a confrontation between a young man and a security guard and that all gates are locked and the public has now been denied access to this well known recreational area. This area is frequented by hikers climbers and dog walkers for many years and was in the process of being developed with the future looking promising for all, as proposed on their website (http://www.thefoothills.ca/) the developers constituted a sustainable eco friendly development. Apparently over the last few days the property has changed hands or is in the process of doing so!
At present all info is hearsay and more info will be available shortly.

Adopt A Crag 2008

for Nanaimo River "The Sunny Side"

written by Greg Sorensen

A trail building week-end was held on September 27th - 28th. Volunteers arrived @ 9:00am and work commenced on gathering supplies such as logs, Bark mulch, Gravel, and rocks. These were all carried down to the first staging area. The logs were stripped of their bark and made ready for the trails. The entrance was also finished and just needs some bark mulch spread on the stairs which will be done in the coming weeks. The trail was then continued past The newly developed "Buzz Wall" heading towards "Pooh Wall" . We now have a large amount of supplies to carry us through the winter. New routes will be arriving over the winter as well.
