Regions - Vancouver Island - North - Crest Creek Crags

The Timberwest road through Strathcona Provincial Park has been deactivated. This significantly alters access to various areas that had potential for new trails, as well as changing access around Crest Lake climbing area. It will now take a substantial volunteer effort to create new trails, to make up for the deactivation. Volunteers from the Heathens (an Access Society member), with support from B.C. Parks, built a footbridge spanning Mud Creek at the outflow of Crest Lake in late 2003. Another group worked on re-routing a section of trail, including re-directing a seasonal creek, which will require the installation of boardwalks.

The Heathens and the Access Society received a grant of $3,600 from Mountain Equipment Co-op's Environment Fund for projects at Crest Crags, and over summer 2004 the Heathens built a parking area. Most trailwork this year has been in the Hidden Walls area, with some at Sunrise. B.C. Parks has now agreed to building a toilet, and it should be built by spring 2006.
